Over the years Canada has been recognized as the country of choice for both resettlement and travel. Thousands of people take a trip to Canada every year, because the country enjoys a remarkable reputation as a nation built on peace, diversity and acceptance. The multicultural environment in Canada welcomes people from multiple ethnicities and cultures. The country's history is very unique because it is heavily based on immigration; Canada was founded by the joint efforts of indigenous First Nations and European settlers from various parts of Europe. No single group can claim Canada as their own because it was a country built by immigrants and refugees from around the world. Immigration has greatly influenced Canadian identity; it became the vehicle that shaped Canada's character, as immigration policy changed and so did Canadian identity. Immigration sponsorship in addition to refugee programs has allowed many Canadian refugees to reunite with their families and these programs have influenced many refugees when they decide to immigrate to Canada. Multiculturalism and bilingualism are what make this country the number one destination for immigrants. The diverse backgrounds and nationalities that make up Canadian society provide Canada with a sense of diversity that cannot be found anywhere in the world. Canada must remain at the forefront of refugee immigration, changing or eliminating refugee programs will cause a loss of national identity. The Canadian government treats refugees and immigrants differently because they are seen as different cases. They define an immigrant as a person who chooses to settle permanently in another country and a refugee as... middle of paper... and at a great disadvantage due to their current living conditions and inaccessibility to medical care is often the cause of their health problems. If we prevent these people from coming to Canada, very fortunately they will not receive the care they need and will die as a result. An alternative suggestion was to go to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and change the definition of “medical condition” to limit seriously ill people and not those with disabilities who can be treated. These proposals will cause a major revamp of Canada's current refugee policies, creating many restrictions and procedures before a refugee can be considered. Many doctors and refugee advocates criticize the idea of cutting health services provided to refugees, arguing that this puts the most vulnerable people (children) at risk)
