First, Othello's race and the racism around him ruined his marriage to Desdemona. Othello and Desdemona were a beautiful couple, but as they say, all good things must come to an end. Almost everyone had a problem with their relationship. At that time, interracial relationships and marriage were not allowed. While Brabantio was sleeping, Iago and Roderigo woke him up from his sleep by saying that Othello was just then having sex with his daughter Desdemona. Brabantio didn't believe them at first, but when he discovered that they were telling the truth and that his white daughter was with “the Moor” Othello, he didn't take it lightly. He couldn't believe that she wanted to be with someone like Othello. He said that Othello must have used some kind of magic to make Desdemona fall in love with him. At the time it must have been a miracle that a black person was with a white person, it was unheard of. Then he began calling Othello a Moor to his face and ordered his guards to take him. It is obvious that almost all of the characters in Othello are racist. If Othello's skin color had been white, Othello and Desdemona lived happily ever after. Racism was shown in many ways in Act I of Othello. When Iago and Roderigo talked about Othello, they called him an "old black ram" (Ii88) and made a sexual reference to Othello and Desdemona by saying that they were "playing the beast with two backs" (Ii115-17). “The Moor” is a reference to the black color of his skin, his features, and represents the people of North Africa (Bartels 434). Most of the characters, including Desdemona, call Othello a Moor. Othello's darkness, his marriage to Desdemona, and his murder are all three important structural elements of Othello and are a... middle of paper... .ate plan to take down Othello. Iago literally regulated Othello throughout the play like a puppet. He projected racist beliefs into Othello's psyche (Adelman 144). It made Othello so hesitant and fragile about his race that he lost his life and killed his wife. Othello's darkness becomes a powerful vehicle for Iago (Adelman 140). Iago was simply leading Othello all over Venice causing chaos. Race has affected Othello's mind in many ways, making him feel distinctive and disengaged from others and highlights his otherness by making him feel more responsible and accepting that Desdemona might betray him. He begins to become more and more helpless against Iago's schemes as he later tries to manipulate him and after that he is left to adjust to his problems on his own in light of the fact that he has no one to trust and express his feelings and emotions.
