Topic > Reflections on social assistance - 1097

“The various social services provided by a State for the benefit of its citizens” is the literal definition of social assistance. However, after completing this course, an introduction to social welfare, I can confidently say that a country or state's social welfare system is much more complex than this simplified definition. A social welfare system is composed of many interconnected macro, mezzo and micro levels. Each of these levels impacts their respective communities, governments, and the nation. After taking a closer look at our social welfare system, I was honored to find a group of professionals dedicated to service, social justice, the dignity and worth of the person, the importance of human relationships, integrity and to the competence that is true to the Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). These ethical views and values further strengthened me to continue studying my master's degree in social work. As I reflect on the semester and my time in this course, I don't know how my views on social well-being couldn't have changed to some degree. Coming into this course as a declared social work major, I already had a vested interest in the material covered and the topic of social welfare. However this was simply an interest, not an understanding. I can now say that I have successfully gained a basic understanding of how our social welfare system works and its importance to our society and its success. My attitudes and ideas about social well-being changed during the duration of this class because I participated in engaged learning and was exposed to many new theories and ideas. I realized that our social welfare system is very complex and is constantly subjected to… middle of paper… what they are facing is refugee resettlement and the many obstacles that come with it. These obstacles can be anything from a lack of government assistance, to difficulty helping a refugee learn English, or difficulties preparing a new refugee for the workforce. My proposed solution to better overcome this problem is to ensure that the Boise community is more educated than it is now. Before taking this course, I really had no idea what a refugee goes through and the difficulties they face, even after arriving safely in the United States. I think people need to be aware of the struggles refugees are facing in order to raise general awareness and concern for this group of individuals. We, as a Boise community, must support the success of the Boise refugee community as a whole and help refugees transition into their new lives as easily as possible.
