All kinds of incidents have occurred across the nation, such as use of force, many of which have made national headlines. This negativity the public has towards law enforcement may be due to the perception that police officers tend to use excessive force against innocent people due to a lack of adequate training. (3051). According to research conducted, the role of education of police officers who have received higher levels of education and training would lead to a more limited use of force (3051). There is no doubt that when making critical decisions such as the use of force you need to think actively. Furthermore, it states that current police forces must become more representative of the community in which they serve and that they must possess proactive communication capabilities in order to defuse hostile incidents (3051). For these reasons, it is critical that departments look for qualities that are important to effective, modern policing. Unfortunately, the hiring requirements do not look for these qualities, and the department often recruits candidates who have not graduated and as a result lack the ability to communicate effectively and lack critical thinking skills (3051). Some of the characteristics that a candidate must possess to become a good police officer are: life experience and maturity, communication skills, good judgment, integrity, respect for authority, confidence and many more (3051).
