As the world turns and turns, our knowledge increases. Every day that passes is lost due to the excess of information in our infinite world. Soon all we will have left is an innumerable amount of useless information. We may understand how our world works, but does it cost us? While we focus on the way our world works, we lose touch with the things that matter most. We start to focus on how to survive in our world where we forget to live it. In the literary works, The Rememberer and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, both authors demonstrate the consequences of losing focus on what truly matters in life. Each main character follows a simple devolution, where they lose focus in life and become an unintelligent creature; leading society to wonder if there is a cure for our overthinking. In The Rememberer, one of the main characters, Ben, has an epiphany where he realizes that humans think too much and have lost touch with their hearts. His epiphany plunges him into a depression, leading him to be described as a sad man. As the story progresses, Ben slips deeper into depression until he commits suicide. Ben transforms into different animals to represent the different stages of his depression and how he loses touch with the human world. When he turns into a monkey, this shows how he is becoming less and less of a man and more and more of a child. He turns to Annie and she sharply orders him “No,” demonstrating the discipline you would teach a child or an animal (Bender 4). After transforming into the turtle, he comes to represent an old man: lonely, aimless and hidden in his shell. Finally, the salamander represents the fact that he is no longer human and loses contact with his world. After... middle of the card... Button, each character avoids devolution and realizes their life goals. Unlike the movie Brazil, Benjamin and Daisy get to spend time together before living different lives. In Brazil, Sam, the protagonist, realizes that the girl of his dreams has been killed. To cope with the news of his death, Sam becomes catatonic and begins to have delusions about himself and his dream girl Jill. Because Benjamin and Daisy managed to have a child together, their emotional stability is preserved and their love stands the test of time. Benjamin's society learned to follow its heart again and stopped using its mind to govern its lives. The main characters of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button transform from animals, governed by the mind, to human beings, capable of feeling emotions and achieving goals. The mind focuses on survival, while the heart focuses on living life to the fullest.
