It is estimated that approximately 600,000 children under 18 are involved in prostitution and pornography, the average age of access to pornography and prostitution is 12 years. 1 in 3 of the 2.8 million children living on the streets will be trafficked into prostitution approximately 2 days after leaving home (“Statistics”). There are few social issues that spark as much outrage as child prostitution or sex trafficking. Child prostitution is a serious dilemma worldwide, and there is much more to this problem than traditional mainstream information. There are three main factors in this topic: who it affects, where it happens, and what we can do to help. The sex trade is primarily made up of young girls who have suffered physical, sexual or emotional abuse before becoming involved in trafficking. . According to a study conducted by Child Lures Prevention “A variety of health and social problems threaten the potential of millions of American children and youth: drug/alcohol/tobacco abuse, depression, suicide, school dropout, teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, homelessness , runaways, prostitution, welfare, divorce, violent crime and so on.” (“Preventing Child Lures”) Another more common way to be affected is sex trafficking, which involves trained people recruiting young teenagers and children and selling them to brothels or prostitutes' houses. Many times these children are even sold by their own families in desperation of not being able to take care of them or simply wanting to get rid of them.
