Topic > Vyquinsky, Vygotsky's Theory of Cognitive Development

Social interaction plays a fundamental role in the development of cognition; the root of this is language. This theory emphasizes the importance of society and culture for cognitive development. From my personal experience, when I was in high school, every year I had a French exchange student, Ugo, who stayed with me for part of my summer. My experience with Ugo has really played a role in my interpretation and understanding of other cultures and societies. Similar to my experience, in tutoring, students are fond and interested in two Chinese students. Many times, Chinese students teach others some Chinese words and share culture. Stars program leaders also take time in the two-hour sessions to teach most students how to use sign language. Students are eager and excited to learn from others about social and cultural differences; this helps shape their perspective of the world and how they interact
