This was the original reason for the push for standardized testing. The “No Child Left Behind [Act]…required states to annually test all students in math and reading from third grade to eighth grade, and once in high school” (Layton). This ensured that all teachers taught to the same standards, giving all students equal opportunities in education. Unfortunately, this has put a lot of pressure on schools and teachers to produce kids with high test scores. As a result, teachers and schools felt like they had to "teach to test." While it's a good idea to hold schools and teachers accountable for what they teach children, standardized testing is not the way to do it. Standardized testing actually prevents the teacher from teaching in the way they think is best for them
