I Remember Mama by George Stevens Beautifully crafted and exquisitely detailed film directed by George Stevens I Remember Mama tells of a Norwegian family living in San Francisco at the beginning of this century. It's an old classic movie, based on the novel by Kathryn Forbes called Mama?s Bank Account. The film is rendered and is a moving act of remembrance about how an immigrant family deals with poverty and how they try to overcome the difficulties of living in a foreign country. I could identify with almost every scene in the film and not because of the era but because of the feelings it provoked. There was so much warmth, so much hope and yet it wasn't the "perfect" family, it was just people living life on life's terms. “We don't want to go to the Big Bank.” That's what mom will say when they have a bill to pay. Everyone will then think of something they can do to help pay the bill. Children have always thought that their parents have a bank account and that they have a lot of money, but they don't know if there is exactly mom's bank account or if their parents have ever been to the bank. Martha Janssen, who plays the key role in this story as ?Mama? he is a dominant member in his family but at the same time he is also very kind and practical. Her family, recently emigrated from their homeland of Norway, is poor and she must keep the family budget detailed to the penny to survive and get out of rent....
