Oedipus the King's Worst Enemy In the Greek tragedy Oedipus the King Tiresias tells the truth when he tells Oedipus, "you are your own worst enemy." He's too determined to find out who he is, it shouldn't be that important to him. He is also too proud to listen to the gods. He thinks he can stop following his destiny. So it is he who condemns himself. First of all, Oedipus is determined to find out who he is. He is unable to accept things as they are and by stubbornly investigating his past, he becomes his own worst enemy by destroying his relationships and himself. When she was young she heard gossip that her father was not her real birth father. He was worried about learning the truth from the oracle. He truly believed that his adoptive parents were his real parents, so he moved to Thebes so as not to fulfill the oracle. When he finally realized that he had killed a man old enough to be his father, he considered the fact that it could have been his father who he had killed. This means he married his mother. Oedipus pushes his mother to kill herself. "The storm, then, let it burst! Born from nothing even if I am tried, let me discover that nothing outside... My loyalty to that family makes me move true to myself. My family I will prove" (Oedipus page 60 ). Oedipus was a very proud man. I believe his pride was his greatest character flaw, and because of his pride, the ending of the play was tragic. He feels he must take responsibility for his actions even though he has no control over them. He no longer wants to live because he married his mother and killed his father and so the oracle came true. "Lost! Ah lost! At last all is clear. Light of my days, turn dark. I no longer want to look. My birth sprang revealed by those it never should have, myself entwined with those I never could. And I am the murderer of those who would never do it." (Oedipus page 67). Oedipus did not listen to the Gods. His circumstances determined his fate, but they could have been broken if he hadn't killed anyone, researched his parents before leaving Corinth, or hadn't been so eager to punish himself or find the killer..
