The digital age has brought with it the advancement of photography, more specifically the practice of photo manipulation. Photo editing software allows the photographer to take a raw, untouched image and transform it into anything they want by manipulating the original. The possibilities are endless. While image manipulation has been around as long as photography itself, the difference is due to advances made in technology that have made it easy to manipulate a photo, which has sparked a debate. On the one hand there are the supporters, those who see editing as a way to further express themselves through their photos. On the opposite side there are those who argue that image editing amounts to deception and do not support it because of the false illusions it creates. Pros and cons put forward convincing arguments to influence their way of thinking. In this essay I will explore the beliefs and arguments that both sides place on the issue of photo editing and whether or not it is moral or immoral. Photography is one of the many ways people choose to express themselves. It is not just a career path, but a hobby for many. Photos can be used to express any kind of emotion, thing or event, realistic or not. Therefore, those who are in favor of editing believe that the invention of photo editing software has simply facilitated a new way to create artistic and unique masterpieces that truly give them the freedom they desire. Photo editing offers the photographer the possibility of producing something that has no boundaries, such as realism. Proponents see photo manipulation more as an enhancement than an illusion. Photo editing is not only used to creatively express something that would otherwise be impossible, but also as a way... middle of paper... to explain why photo editing should and should not be used. What struck me most was the idea of the value of beauty and creativity. Both parties accept that photography should be an outlet for creativity that captures beauty. The difference for me was in the definitions they had of beauty and creativity. Proponents of photo editing seem to think about beauty and creativity at the same time, since the creativity put into the photo is what makes it beautiful. Those who are against editing would probably agree with this statement, however they seem to find that beauty lies in natural representation and that it is possible to capture it creatively without altering it. To explore whether or not you agree with the moral or immoral aspect of photo editing, you need to explore the value you place on aesthetics and ethics in terms of photography and what it means in itself.
