Search engines have become the go-to when it comes to searching for information. It doesn't matter if you prefer Google, Bing, Yahoo or anything else, search engines are the way to go to find anything. Even though there are many search engines out there, Google still holds the top spot. We as a company Google everything; recipes, directions, things about our personal lives, everything. Much of our personal information is available on the web thanks to search engines, social media sites, and other websites we use. Google takes our personal information floating somewhere in cyberspace and uses it in the results it provides. While Google thinks this is a good approach, it isn't. Personalizing search results is a bad idea because the information used to do the personalization and how it is obtained could compromise the privacy of Internet users. Google obtains information from social network accounts, the websites where we shop online, and many other sources. Although search engines require that whatever information we enter about ourselves remain in the search engine, nowadays it is very easy for an individual to gain access to another person's information. Sometimes “it is not clear whether most people have voluntarily consented to have information about them entered into databases or online forums accessible to search engines” (Tavani 2014). We become “targets” of search engine user queries” (Tavani 2014). Other search engine users can easily find information about another individual which can lead to problems such as cyberbullying, cyber stalking and identity theft because one's social security is available to users. Many people online... middle of paper...... user information to personalize search results. Sometimes this is information about users that they don't want to know and information that they didn't enter voluntarily. This is a clear violation of Internet users' privacy. This information that Google is saving in its database can easily be found by those with malicious intent, which is a huge wake-up call. And Google reading Gmail users' emails to personalize search results is the biggest violation of Internet users' privacy. Many Internet users do not realize that their privacy is at risk. Google told users only that they personalize search results through information found on social media, websites where we shop and other sources. Why Google has failed to explain to people the consequences associated with personalizing search results and does not provide the best user experience it claims.
