Income inequality is a major ongoing problem in the United States. It has a great effect on what America was, the American dream. The American dream that everyone is equal and has equal opportunities. While much of what happens in the United States simply doesn't fit the American Dream; women are unequal in the workplace. They are placed under the so-called “glass ceiling”. Women are not promoted in the workplace and do not receive the same pay as men. This also leads to a gap between men and women. Both create income inequality for women and impact their American dream. There is a long history of women dealing with the “glass ceiling.” Over time women have made progress, but more progress is needed to make things equal. Women suffer from income inequality due to the “glass ceiling” and employment gap, thus going against the American dream. The American dream began with equality for all and the ability for all to have equal opportunities. Or as Truslow Adams said “it is that dream of a land in which life should be better, richer and fuller for all, with opportunities for each according to ability and achievement, regardless of social class or circumstances of birth” (Kings 572-573) . This is the way America was meant to be, no one zeroed out and everyone equal. One way or another this has never been entirely true, there has always been some kind of inequality. From the beginning we have had slavery, degrading African Americans and not giving them the same rights, as a white man would. This lasted a long time and then came the Great Depression, which created income inequality, killing the economy and ruining the field of work for the average worker, and now a day... middle of paper... .I press ; Arlington, Virginia: Independent Women's Forum, 1999.
