Topic > Jim Jones Genocide in Jonestown, Guyana - 938

“Never forget” is the slogan for atrocities such as the Holocaust, the 9/11 attacks and all genocides around the world in a way to remember and prevent future events. Little did we know that a Holocaust-like murder would take place in Jonestown, Guyana on Saturday, November 18, 1976. That date will be a day that many will “never forget”. Jim Jones was a religious fanatic who founded The People's Church. He preached socialist views and lies to gain followers. With growing paranoia he moved to Guyana with a thousand followers, most would never leave Jonestown again, but would be killed in a mass "suicide". (Contemporary American Religion) Although the People's Church appeared to be a peaceful and loving organization, Reverend Jim Jones killed more than nine hundred of his people (including children and an investigative team led by Congressman Leo Ryan). His lack of punishment, due to his killing, in no way fits his crime and can never be justified. Jim Jones was a religious leader in Indiana, and he preached his views to a very diverse community. His sermons were full of socialist visions and “healings” in which he would perform miracles. As time went on more and more people joined his church formally known as The People's Temple (Encyclopedia of Religion). His paranoia about nuclear war and an attempt to distance himself from the corrupt system drove Jones to purchase land in Guyana. With the land purchased, Jones fled the United States with over a thousand followers to create what he believed would be a peaceful place, without harassment from the outside world. Jones had swindled money from most of his congregation, so he was able to set up a large camp in the middle of the jungle, cut off from everything. Armed men lined the gates and once you enter, follow... the center of the card... take it easy. People in society should be careful who they trust. The Peoples Temple began as just another church with socialist and extremist views but with greed, transformed into a dictatorship. Also, never trust things that are too good to be true. Jones gave his followers exactly what they wanted to see, miracles, peace, and hope for a better life (Contemporary American Religion). Use common sense before investing in something that seems miraculous. Because the crime against humanity of killing 945 innocent people in a mass murder has never been punished nor is the action justifiable. Jones deceived, imprisoned and killed large numbers of people. Jones is a disgrace to the human race and has never been punished for his crimes. We will never forget the acts of horrendous treatment towards people because they remind us that oblivion makes things like the day in Jonestown happen.
