Literature Review“Introduction to Special Issues on College Student Mental Health”Mental health awareness for college students has become an eye-catching and very popular topic for researchers in the last decade. After a series of malicious school shootings by mentally and emotionally unstable academic students, other students at other universities began to worry about the mental state of their peers. Researchers studied to discover a trend in college students' relationships and their psychosocial lives. Linda G. Castillo (affiliated with Texas A&M University) and Seth J. Schwarts (University of Miami) wrote the article. In April 2013, “Introduction to the Special Issue on College Student Mental Health” was published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology. In the article “Introduction to the Special Issue on College Student Mental Health,” an informative overview of the multi-site organization University Study of Identity and Culture (MUSIC) collected data from thirty universities to study psychosocial, relational, cultural, and related to health among university students. The article provides students' perspectives and concerns about the mental health of their peers and the services provided by campuses. In 2010, when the American College Health Association administered the National College Health Assessment by surveying over thirty thousand students on thirty-nine campuses, surveys showed an exponential increase in psychological problems (2013). This survey, in conjunction with studies of college students, suggests that college students, especially women and minorities, are indeed experiencing depression and mental health problems that may go undiagnosed or treated. While this study in no way serves to expose those used in the research process, students may react differently to those who are open to sharing their experience personal with the topic.
