I don't think you can ever be prepared for the culture shock of some stories. The acts of what is normal for a society and the one we live in can be drastically different, as seen in Nadine Gordimer's short story Country Lovers. One generally hopes for the best in any piece of literature, however, literature is often at the tail end of telling horrible truths, even if it is fiction. Country Lovers is a great example of a dramatic truth that can be discovered in different cultures around the world. Unfortunately, visual differences are not always accepted. I found the story of Country Lovers by Nadine Gordimer very disturbing because it depicts segregation and intolerance of those who are different from each other. In the story, I felt pity and disgust that the children no longer played together once they reached school age. The fact that “white” children have had a better education than others is still terrible, as is the case in other areas such as Brazil (Marteleto, 2012).
