The Institutional Review Board was established in the second half of the twentieth century to protect human subjects in research. The official date that the Institutional Review Board became law is July 12, 1974. On this day, human beings subjected to behavioral and biomedical research became officially protected. The founding of the Institutional Review Board is the result of many significant historical events. Throughout history there have been many laws that have acted to limit and regulate research. Examples of laws protecting the interests of individuals date back to the first century, when Celsus understood that there must be an advantage to the individual to subject him to an experiment. Furthermore, in the 5th century, Hippocrates instituted the doctor's oath. This oath ensured that doctors performed procedures in the best interests of the individual. The expansion in the number of people doing research can be attributed to the scientific revolution of the eighteenth century. This time period initiated a method of investigation consisting of valid measurements. After the expansion of universities during the late 19th century, human research expanded and enacted laws to defend individuals from unethical procedures. At the beginning of the 20th century, the framework of experimentation on human subjects was drastically changed. The main issue at the forefront was ethical issues during the experiments. These problems have led to government regulation and conduct laws. The most important concept focused on benefit versus risk in the scientific experiment. Another concept was the guarantee of consent on the part of the individual taking part in the scientific experiment. Finally, research established that employees with low to medium power distance had job tension and procedural injustices facilitated by conflict between supervisors. When it came to employees with high power distance, they were unable to find this link (Liu et. al, 2013). In essence, this study found that fairness is necessary for a functional relationship between employees and supervisors. The future of equity theory will look at a more macro level instead of the current micro level. Instead of taking only small samples, equity theory will try to focus on entire types of organizations. Furthermore, equity theory will seek to research other cultures.
