I started out tutoring at the Boys & Girls Club (BGC) and eventually became a teacher at the Boys & Girls Club. The goal of my ongoing volunteer work was to enrich children's after-school experience, whether they needed help with homework or busy work. During my volunteer work the issue that continually struck me was social class or classism. The BGC highlights many different issues and points such as “creating aspirations for the future”, “Helping young people to become responsible, care for citizens and acquire skills to participate in the democratic process is the main objective of these programs and also to develop capacity for leadership and provide opportunities for planning and decision-making". BGC encourages kids to engage in healthy, positive behaviors and to help young people build and discover creativity in the arts “Club programs help develop physical fitness, positive use of free time, stress reduction, appreciation for the environment and social activities and interpersonal skills." (bgca.org) The importance of this issue and the reason why it was so obvious to me was because the kids who came to or participated in BGC normally belonged to the social class and lower income. The lower class is blamed for the most crimes due to various reasons, from not having a good role model to not having enough to do after school and BGC steps in to try to change these statistics/results. giving children something to do after school and/or providing good role models In this article I will explain the importance of classism and the importance of organizations like BGC and its effects on children. (bgca.org) Classism is lesser or different treatment based on social class. Classism is the oppression of minority class groups for advantage and strength… at the heart of the card… the mission is not for all children but for many children. The clubs try to help marginalized and sidelined children and doing so is very effective. I'll probably come back when I'm not in college and volunteer. Classism will continue as the gap between social classes continues to widen, however clubs and organizations can help kids grow and achieve what they otherwise would not have been able to achieve otherwise. Positivity can go a long way. Works cited "BGCA helps parents inspire their children to give back during the holidays." Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Np, nd Web. December 04, 2013."Class Action."
