Topic > 7-Year War between France and British America - 708

In the years 1754 to 1763 there was a war between British America and New France. This war was commonly known as the French and Indian War, but was also called the Seven Years' War. From the beginning the French were doomed to failure due to their small army, which is why the French helped the Indians. Despite the efforts of the French, the British Army was a large and powerful army that far surpassed the French, leading to the British victory. However, all great things come at a price. After the victory of the English in the French and Indian War, they accumulated large debts. Not only did the French lose many men, but they lost all the territory they had in America. The French were obviously angry with the result and will eventually want revenge. At the end of the war, in 1763, the English began to tax the colonists to somehow compensate for the huge accumulated debt. The British came up with the Sugar Act in 1764. Then they created the Stamp Act in 1765, which taxed official documents. The English also enforced the Townshend Acts; however, the American colonist would not tolerate this “no taxation without representation.” The colonist first wrote a petition to parliament, however the British parliament wanted money and did not care what the colonist had to say. Then, after seeing their efforts fail, the colonists began an economic boycott. One of the most famous protests occurred on March 5, 1770 and is known as the Boston Massacre. An angry mob was on the streets of Boston while 8 British soldiers (formally known as redcoats) were on the streets of Boston being threatened by colonists. In fact, objects were thrown at him. British troops opened fire on the colonist, killing him...... middle of paper......while fighting the British. George Washington was the commander of the Continental Army at the time. However, George lost many more battles than he won during the American Revolution, but despite all his defeats, the Battle of Yorktown is very important. Despite George's numerous defeats, the Battle of Saratoga (which occurred in 1778) is what convinced and assured the French that we might have a chance of winning this revolution. It's bad to say it, but without the help of the French in the revolution, the colonist would have lost. The last battle of the Revolution was the Battle of Yorktown, which occurred in 1781. It was common for British generals to surrender after losing a battle, which is why General Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington's Continental Army. This last battle is what determined who won the war despite George's many failures.
