Collectivism is a group that shares a single goal and does not accept any individual to think or act on their own. Individuals should sacrifice their own desires for the group and focus only on the demands of its organization. Each older generation in the film, played by Lindo, An-mei, Ying-Ying, and Suyuan, exhibit collectivism in their lives when living in China. Because of women's submissive culture, they rarely have an opinion and have to obey men's rules, they are sold to marry and have children, they are violated and disrespected by their spouses. Their daughters also showed signs of submissiveness towards their relationships, but due to their mothers' interference and having experienced that lifestyle in the past, they helped their daughters fix the relationships. Lindo was sent by a matchmaker from the age of 15 to get married to a man she does not know and to bear a child to the man's family. As a culture and tradition, the Chinese believe in the union of two families with similar conditions in terms of wealth and social status (Groom and Bride. n.d.). An-mei was separated from her mother by her grandparents at a young age, after her grandparents accused An-mei's mother of breaking a widow's vows and remarrying another man, she didn't know the reason why she married the rich merchant was because she had been raped by this man and as a result became pregnant, to protect her child she decided to marry him and become his fourth wife. In China, depending on the man's social status, it is legal to marry more than one woman (Women in Modern China. n.d.). Ying-Ying married a family friend at a young age and became pregnant by him.
