Reflective practice has its impact during the transition phase of nursing from theory to practice. This paper discusses the meaning and effectiveness of reflective practice among Australian new graduate nurses. It begins by identifying the influence and implications of reflective practice on novice nurses, detailing its benefits in the current and future context. Subsequently, its use as a tool during the transition phase of nursing practice is highlighted. It relates the benefits of reflective practice among new nurses and its impact on their professional, emotional, and professional transformation. This essay will then focus on reflecting on practice outcomes and learning issues among new nurses. However, it also highlights the obstacles and limitations of reflective practice. It allows readers to gain useful information on the use and benefits of reflective practice in the nursing context. This essay will argue that reflective practice as a tool enables graduate nurses to develop their professional, personal and emotional capabilities. Reflective practice receives impressive attention in higher nursing education and is generally recognized as an essential skill for successful professional practice (Smith & Trede, 2013). Skillful anticipation of reflective practice is often observed among novice healthcare professionals. It has been mentioned as a related aspect for the development of professional skills such as experiential learning, the continuous learning process and the ability to experiment with current practices (Mann, Gordon, & MacLeod, 2009; Horton-Deutsch & Sherwood, 2008). This was further supported by qualitative research conducted among new graduate nurses with a journal… mid-article… of critical reflection to highlight learning in professional practice.
