Sometimes they are positive, however, other times they are not. Those who enjoy being left alone will tend to have positive effects over negative ones. This is because they can tolerate minimal amounts of social interaction and are happy with who they are. Henry Clerval could feel “the weight on . . . [his] spirit. . . On the other hand, those who are isolated and do not fully understand themselves tend to have negative effects when they are alone. The lack of social interaction between humans can create problems for an individual. It can cause difficulties with learning, memory, and internal negative feelings. Anything can create nervousness, and even “the falling of a leaf [can] frighten” (34) someone after being left alone for too long. When Victor locked himself up “he was alarmed by the shipwreck. . . That . . . [he] had become” (34). Having the world closed off drove Victor crazy. He was “oppressed by a slight fever” (34), and his health was not excellent.
