A minority group is defined as “a subordinate group whose members have significantly less control or power over their own lives than members of a dominant or majority group”(1). Most minority groups are defined by common characteristics such as distinguishing skin color, language and are commonly united and have a high number of marriages within the group. Members of these groups are victims of colonialism, or the long-term maintenance of power from one territory to another. Victims of these inequalities are often presented with fewer opportunities due to false labels and unfair stereotypes. All minority groups are affected by inequalities in different ways socially, politically and even in the media. Generally, there are four basic types of minority groups: racial, ethnic, religious, and gender. However, the term minority does not necessarily refer only to the number of people in that group. Women make up more than half of the population and are still defined as a minority group. (5) I believe that race is often defined as a type of minority, but when you examine the facts, the treatment of women has many similar characteristics. The reading even stated that patriarchal society is a universal concept. The fact is that most countries consider males to be the dominant gender. Historians struggle to understand how this dominance ended and the only logical explanation was due to the physical limitations of pregnancy. Women could endure the same conditions due to their frail body and were left at home to take care of the children. This is where this inequality is believed to have originated. (3) Living in the United States, there are laws in place intended to abolish the unjust treaty... middle of paper... I feel that if there was a little more acceptance from a global standpoint, and the movement to judge based on a person's abilities rather than biased opinions, these problems could be completely abolished. More policies need to be established to level out wage inequality, a problem for me, and it seems ridiculous that it hasn't been solved yet. There is no doubt that, with enough compliance from the global community, this issue could become one for the history books instead of an ongoing fight for equality. Having role models in the community who can lead the way or break the mold of conformity are the ones who make change possible. Without Susan B. Anthony showing up at the polls in 1872, there might have been a longer period of voting restrictions. Every time someone stands up there is the possibility that a chain reaction will occur, that it will spark a movement, a revolution.
