I grew up in Waterford Michigan, in a neighborhood called Waterford Meadows. The neighborhood was made up of middle working class citizens, almost entirely Caucasian Americans, nuclear families (domestic unit consisting of unmarried parents and children), and men were the breadwinners while women were the housewives. Today Waterford is a growing town; commercial buildings on every corner, new subdivisions, bigger streets and high-class restaurants. When I was a child in the early 1980s, Waterford wasn't as populated as it is today. Many of those who lived there were elderly people who lived in much older homes. Waterford doesn't have a city center area where people can go for a Sunday stroll, but it has plenty of beautiful lakes. This is where the name comes from. With every road traveled there is a lake to see or one nearby. The lakes are often taken for granted by the people who live here. We often forget their beauty and how rare it is to have so many people around us. Summers and winters tend to never be boring in Waterford. One skill that most of us who live here learn is how to swim at a young age. It is very rare to find a person who doesn't know how to swim in Waterford. There are always lakes to ski on, jet ski on or hop on the tube for some summer fun and always lakes to ice skate on in the winter. The only other Waterford landmark would be the Waterford Wave Pool. This place is a big attraction in both summer and winter. People of all ages and from different areas come and join the fun in the Wave Pool. It's basically a small water theme park located in Waterford. In the summer there is a giant pool where more than 200 people can swim and every 10 minutes a bell rings and waves start to form. To the left of the large pool there is a children's pool where the little ones swim. Towards the bottom there are two gigantic water slides. There are places to eat, a playground and plenty of water for swimming. In winter, a giant toboggan run is built, its nickname is "Fridge". There are also many ice skating rinks. It is a place to relax and have fun with family and friends during the changing of the seasons. A unique feature of Waterford is the fact that it is close to 4 townships; West Bloomfield, White Lake, Walled Lake and Union Lake.
