The United States should use a word that shows more positivity such as newcomer, adopted citizen, or even immigrant. Although federal law states that “alien” means someone on the border of a country, but not a native of that country, many immigrants interpret this word as non-human. Even Jose Antonio Vargas said that using the word “alien” towards immigrants “has become such standard practice for politicians and the media… that even people of all political persuasions don't think twice about doing so.” . Eliminating this overused word would increase happiness and more job opportunities for immigrants, which would be good. And wouldn't this be beneficial to the American economy? Shouldn't we, as a society, abolish this word since it is very clear that the word "alien" is disrespectful and offensive? Would you feel offended if you were ever called a foreigner in another country? If so, then we can assume that this is what many immigrants living in the United States feel when they are reminded of who they are in the country.
