Professionalism is defined as a person's conduct at work. The quality of professionalism is not limited to those in occupations with a high level of education or high earnings. Any worker, regardless of education or occupation level, should demonstrate a high level of this characteristic (About.com, 2013). Acting professionally in the workplace makes others view you as trustworthy, respectful, and competent. Professionalism, however, can take many different forms that depend on where you work and the type of job responsibilities you have. There are few common traits when it comes to being professional (Monster, 2013). This includes being Competent. These characteristics mean that you are good at what you do and have the skills and knowledge that allow you to do your job well (Monster, 2013). It also includes self-awareness, self-confidence and social skills. The competent person should display leadership skills, decision-making skills, teamwork skills and the ability to inform others of necessary information. He or she always lives up to the requirements of their profession and is also able to seek resources when necessary to remain competent (Octech.edu, 2013). Being a trustworthy person means that your colleagues can count on you to show up on time and submit your work when it should be ready (Monster, 2013). Showing up late to work or meetings gives the impression that you don't care about your job, so make sure you pay attention to the clock.
