Complexity of managementINTRODUCTIONManagement can be defined in different ways however according to the Concise Oxford Dictionary Ninth Edition "Organize, regulate, be responsible for an organization, a group etc.; be able to achieve; satisfy their needs with limited resources." Although the fundamentals of management remain the same across different industries, different sizes of organizations, and different levels of management, there are variations in the roles played by managers. These variations are driven by differences in the environment and differences in the challenges presented to managers in their individual industries. The roles of managers, the complexity of the managerial role and the importance of managers to organizational performance, management in the small business sector and the public sector and variations within the managerial role will be discussed. THE ROLES OF MANAGERS (Davidson & Griffin, 2003, p 16 – 17) states that Henry Mintzberg, a management researcher, studied the daily activities of a group of CEOS and established that managers perform 10 different roles and these roles fall within therefore into 3 basic categories. These categories are interpersonal, informational, and decisional. The interpersonal category involves the manager dealing with other people. Includes the roles of figurehead, leader and liaison officer. The figure role played by managers includes ceremonial and symbolic activities. Motivating, supporting and training employees allows the manager to play a leadership role. The role of liaison officer is one in which the manager acts as a coordinator between communicating people, groups or organizations.
