New York City's Jamaica Bay stretches between Brooklyn and Queens, the bay serves as a multipurpose area for all New Yorkers and residences, the 2014 Kayak Fishing Classic in Jamaica Bay is an exceptional event and the next annual event for fishing enthusiasts. The bay also serves as an environmental refuge habitat for migratory birds, shellfish and other wildlife. Although New York City has cleaned up New York's surrounding waters in recent decades, including Jamaica Bay, there are still some troubling issues facing the bay's environment. More than four city sewage treatment plants discharge more than 200 million gallons of partially treated wastewater into the bay. Due to the effects of bacteria and high amounts of nitrogen in partially treated wastewater, the bay is exposed to algae blooms (algae blooms make the water cloudy and kill algae in the water), thus decreasing levels of oxygen for aquatic life.
