Comparison between Sophocles' Oedipus and Senaca The myth of Oedipus is that of a man struck down by forces that align against him. Over the years, different playwrights have interpreted his character in various ways. In Sophocles' Oedipus the King, Oedipus is a man blind to the path his questions lead him on and exemplifies the typical tyrannical leader of ancient times; in Senaca's Oedipus, it is the fear of his questions that gives Oedipus greater depth of character, a depth that he must overcome if he is to survive his ordeal. Sophocles creates a character of extreme anger and ferocity to confront the source of ruin. about the city. He curses the murderer of King Laius, the murderer who brought the plague." Upon the murderer I invoke this curse - whether he is a lonely and completely unknown man or one of many - may he wear himself out if he lives in misery and ruin! If with my knowledge lives in my hearth, I pray to feel my curse myself. Upon you I impose my task to accomplish all this for me, for God and for this land of ours destroyed and ruined by the forsaken God 245-254)."When it is suggested that Oedipus himself might be the source of the plague, his anger emerges in full force. "(The truth has strength,) but not for you (Tiresias); it has no strength for you because you are blind in mind and ears as well as in eyes (Soph. OT 370-371)." The Oedipus of Senaca's work is not so reckless. He seems to fear what will result from his exploration of Laius' death, even though the conditions of his city are as terrible as Sophocles'. "I tremble, wondering which way fate will take. My unstable mood could swing in either direction. When joys and sorrows are so close to each other, the mind is in doubt. How much should be seen? How much is better to know? I am doubtful. (Sen. Oed. 204-208)." This Oedipus even thinks that the plague may have something to do with him, that his dominion may be the contamination that has descended on the city (Sen. Oed. 40). It is this anxiety that Seneca wants to bring out in his work, one of the emotions that are the downfall of man.
