Why Evolution Is True is a book by Jerry A. Coyne about how modern man slowly evolved from single-celled organisms. This book changed my entire perspective on evolution. Before reading this book I strongly believed in creation, but while reading this book I realized that there are many connections between all the animals on earth. I can't see a scenario where we could share so many of our genes with other creatures and yet claim that we didn't evolve from other animals and were simply created by a god. What is evolution? Evolution in modern terms is quite easy to understand. Evolution is the theory that life on earth began with a single-celled organism that lived more than 3.5 billion years ago that slowly evolved over time into many different creatures. When you break this theory down into sections you get 6 factors: evolution, gradualism, speciation, common ancestry, natural selection, and non-selective mechanisms of evolutionary change. The first part of the theory of evolution is evolution itself. Evolution itself is the idea that a species undergoes a genetic change over time to evolve into something very different. These differences are seen in our DNA and are initially considered mutations, but slowly become the norm. The second part of the theory of evolution is gradualism. Gradualism is the idea that many generations are needed to produce substantial evolutionary change. An example of this change is birds gaining the ability to fly. The third part of the theory of evolution is speciation. Speciation means that different groups of creatures that cannot exchange genes with each other cannot interbreed. The fourth part of the theory of evolution is common ancestry. The common ancestry is... the middle part of the document... it's very minor. Chapter nine is Evolution Redux. Creationists find evolution very convincing but at the same time they still don't believe in it. There is no shortage of evidence that evolution is the truth. Every day hundreds of observations and experiments are made that prove evolution is true. Every fossil and piece of DNA observed indicates that evolution is a fact. The evidence proving evolution is true is so overwhelming that it is hard to believe that people still believe in a creator. Evolution is neither moral nor immoral, it is simply the truth. Once people understand that we are the only creatures created by natural selection with a brain complex large enough to understand the laws that govern the universe, this will be the extraordinary product of evolution.
