Shows such as “Love & Hip Hop,” “Basketball Wives,” and “Scandal,” also known as ratchet television, have an effect on stereotypes surrounding African American women. Some stereotypes commonly associated with African American women are that they have bad attitudes or short tempers, are loud, and act ghetto. This is also known as the mammy stereotype. Nominated shows are popularized for all these stereotypical reasons. The constant drama that occurs due to the short-tempered, loud, and poor grammar that African American women use on these shows provides top-notch ratings. The problem occurs because, again, these women are very influential to the young African American women who watch the shows, so the behaviors have started to manifest themselves and the same cycle of the young African American men repeats itself in the
